In 2016, Local Law 02-2016 was enacted, creating a reimbursement fund for non-public schools with over 300 students, allowing them to use taxpayer dollars to cover the cost of keeping their school facilities safe through contracts with private security firms. Charter schools in private space were not included.
Now, the NYC Council is considering Intro-70-2018, which extends the protection to all non-public schools, but still excludes charter schools in private space! If passed as is, these schools will be the only schools in New York City that are not eligible to be reimbursed for the cost of security guard services.
We are calling on the New York City Council to revise Intro-70-2018, and allow public schools operating in private space the same benefit as the City’s wealthiest schools. All students deserve to feel safe!
