ELL Recruitment Guide

As public schools, New York City charter schools seek to serve and best educate all students, including students whose primary language is not English. Successfully recruiting these English Language Learners (ELLs) depends on much more than the usual outreach and marketing. Charter schools that are successful in recruiting ELL students make a comprehensive commitment to community engagement, student achievement and cultural diversity that is strategically planned and implemented. Steal This Plan

This month, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a new School Renewal Program to improve 94 of the city’s most struggling schools. The program includes versions of three practices that are hallmarks of top charter schools, but a comparison of Renewal School plans to charter school practices reveals consistent differences in urgency and intensity. As NYC DOE continues to define, implement and strengthen this high- stakes program, as well as prepare support and turnaround plans for hundreds of other schools, charter schools stand ready to share their work.

Think Pair Share

Think-pair-share is a widely-used strategy that can be successfully implemented in classrooms across all grade levels. This learning strategy promotes structured student interaction and is a great way for teachers to support the features of the Interaction component of the SIOP Model. It can also be an effective way to differentiate instruction by providing students time and structure for thinking about a given topic, enabling them to formulate individual ideas and share these ideas with a peer, and ultimately the entire class/group (Simon, 2014).
