How do I apply to a charter school? Is the lottery system fair?

To determine what the application process and due dates are, please contact the charter schools directly.  You can find each charter school’s contact information on our website under Maps and Locations.

Charter school applicants do not have to take tests to get in and can apply to more than one school at a time.  Students are selected through a random lottery which is usually held in early April. Charter schools then notifies the families of students who got in; those whose child's name was not selected can ask to be put on a charter school's wait list.

Charter schools are in high demand.  Recent polls show that 67% of New York City voters favor charter schools and would like to see more of them.  In 2008, more than 39,000 applications were submitted for only 8,500 openings at New York City's charter schools.
