The New York City Charter School Center assists start-up teams in each step of the process. We provide workshops and trainings as well as a host of other supports. The Charter Center is here to save you time and money and equip you with the necessary resources to get chartered and be a successful public school.

Training Strands:
Application Writing:
The Charter Center provides trainings to help start-up teams write a clear, effective charter application. Trainings will focus on learning and understanding what each authorizer is looking for and the nuances of each application. Trainer Sonia Park leads the application workshops, work sessions and basic peer and professional reviews to better equip start-up teams in tackling the application process.

Leadership Training:
Charter Center staff members Niomi Plotkin and Jeff Maclin host several training sessions focused specifically on leadership to help novice leaders develop a skill set and provide them with models, exemplary practices, and a cohort of colleagues. Through these sessions, participants will have an opportunity to explore their leadership abilities and learn what additional skills are needed to be a successful leader of an educational institution.

Academic Design Training:
The Academic Design trainings are intended to help school leaders understand curriculum development and academic planning through the study of box curricula, independently created curricula, and combinations that match New York state standards. Trainers Cynthia Millinger, Paul Thallner and Dr. Arthur Sadoff will instruct participants on how to create an academic program in which data and assessment, school culture, professional development, curriculum and schedule all function coherently.

The Operations and Management training sessions are essential for school leaders and operations directors as they navigate their way through the complexity of running a charter school. Trainers work with school leaders and founders to develop the knowledge, skills, and tools that will enable them to institutionalize sound strategies to sustain the school's fiscal and organizational viability.

Governance Training:
A charter school's Board of Trustees is responsible for fiscal oversight, leadership evaluations, school viability and success measures, and long-term sustainability. The Governance workshops are designed to help individuals new to the charter school sector understand and appreciate the key issues they will confront. Charter Center staff and assorted panelists guide participants in selecting an effective board as well as transitioning from being a founding board to a governing board.
