Emerging Leader Fellowship

The New York City Charter School Center's Emerging Leader Fellowship Program (ELF) is a rigorous, year-long program designed to take exceptional teachers and train them to become outstanding secondary leaders, including assistant principals and deans of students.

ELF seeks to minimize the ongoing challenge that many charter schools face in recruiting and retaining talented individuals who are committed to a school's culture and understand how to help schools fulfill their missions.

How Does ELF Work?

ELF provides educators with a mix of practicum-based initiatives and seminar-style learning that focuses on the cornerstones of effective schools.  Fellows gain expertise through rotation topics including:

  • Assessment
  • Observation
  • Hiring
  • Accountability
  • Finance

How Does a Teacher Join ELF?

Fellows are nominated by their school leaders, who serve as their mentors during the program.  Fellows are required to:

  • Attend training sessions every other week for three hours
  • Meet weekly with their school leaders
  • Reduce their teaching load by 10%
  • Complete a leadership practicum
  • Complete five projects directly related to their schools' needs

All Fellows are granted access to the ELF portal, which enables them to view and submit assignments, participate in a discussion forum, and view videos of lectures.

ELF is free and participating charter schools receive a small stipend for their fellows.
