STATEMENT ON TODAY'S BIPARTISAN PASSAGE OF HR 10 IN THE US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

(New York, NY) Please attribute the following statement to James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter School Center:

"It's a huge step in the right direction that HR 10 passed the House of Representatives today, with strong bipartisan support from a diverse cross-section of national leaders," said James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter School Center. "This valuable legislation shows the leadership from the Federal government and stresses key commitments to replicating quality at the state and federal standards, increasing competition at the state level and boosts startup funds and growth of quality charter schools. We are grateful for the leadership of Chairman Kline and Ranking Member Miller for setting an example that we hope will be heard in cities and states nationwide – especially in low-income communities, where a choice among quality schools is needed the most. In particular, we would like to thank the members of the NYC congressional delegation who voted yes on the bill: Representatives Joseph Crowley, Eliot Engle, Hakeem Jeffries, Jerrold Nadler, Carolyn Maloney, Gregory Meeks, Grace Meng, Charles Rangel and Jose Serrano.”
