STATEMENT FROM NYC CHARTER SCHOOL CENTER CEO JAMES MERRIMAN ON MAYORAL CONTROL DEAL
(New York, NY) Please credit the following statement to James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter School Center:
"Thanks to Governor Cuomo's and Senator Flanagan's steadfast leadership, the larger conversation around mayoral control produced important new pathways for the de Blasio administration and the charter sector to find common cause in making every public school a great one. These agreements, together with the understanding that previously issued charters that had been subsequently revoked can now be used to start high-quality public charter schools, are good news for the tens of thousands of parents on charter school wait lists and the more than hundred thousand parents who already choose to enroll their children in them.
"While we do not yet agree with City Hall on all issues, and we are a long way from the true partnership the charter sector has sought, we credit Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Farina for taking these steps. We hope they are an auger of future conversations that come from common policy interests, not just political necessity. We hope this is a harbinger of a time when the mayor and we stand arm-in-arm to ensure that existing charter schools are fairly funded, and new ones are allowed to open without state-imposed caps that arbitrarily limit growth.
"It is long past time for educators to be able to prepare the next generation of New Yorkers for a changing world, without the distraction of political fights."
