STATEMENT FROM NYC CHARTER SCHOOL CENTER CEO JAMES MERRIMAN ON THE
NEW YORK SENATE’S RESOLUTION ON STATE EDUCATION LAWS

(New York, NY) Please attribute the following statement to New York City Charter School Center CEO James Merriman:

"Fueled by overwhelming demand from parents in many of New York's lowest income communities, public charter schools have a mandate to offer students a quality public education, and they have been delivering for more than a decade," said James Merriman, Chief Executive Officer of the New York City Charter School Center. "And for just as long, these public school parents and students who embrace them have been victims of inequitable treatment and funding. Today, State Senate leadership signaled its commitment to changing that status quo and moving to funding equity and the ability of charter schools to participate in Universal Pre-K so that they can better fulfill their mission.

We are grateful that Majority Leader Skelos and Co-Majority Leader Klein have joined Governor Cuomo in hearing the pleas of public charter school parents, and have taken meaningful steps to ensure that charter school students have stable homes, just as traditional school students have always had. We now look forward to working with the leadership in Albany to continue the dialogue the State Senate has rightly begun.

At the same time, we are heartened that Mayor de Blasio hears the calls of New York charter school families who are asking for nothing more than fair treatment under state and city policy for the schools that they have chosen and that are working for their children. We are hopeful that this will lead to his unambiguous endorsement of legislation that gives charters equity in programs, funding and facilities.”
